Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, the 22-year-old accused of shooting an Orthodox Jewish man multiple times in Chicago, has died by apparent suicide in his jail cell. Cook County Sheriff’s Office officials reported that Abdallahi was found unresponsive during a routine check on Saturday afternoon. Jail staff initiated life-saving measures and transported him to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Sheriff's office stated there were no prior indications of suicidal tendencies and no signs of foul play. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy.

Abdallahi, a Mauritanian national, was in custody for the October 26th shooting near the 6800 block of North Washtenaw Avenue. The 39-year-old victim, identified as an Orthodox Jewish man wearing a kippah and on his way to synagogue, was shot in the shoulder. He was treated at a hospital and later released. Following the shooting, responding officers exchanged gunfire with Abdallahi, resulting in his arrest and hospitalization for multiple gunshot wounds. No officers were injured in the exchange.

Abdallahi was facing serious charges, including terrorism, a hate crime, six counts of attempted first-degree murder, and seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer or firefighter.
