Cook County Sheriff's Deputy Fatally Shot in Turks and Caicos

A tragic incident unfolded in the Turks and Caicos Islands over the weekend, claiming the life of a Cook County Sheriff's Deputy. Shamone Duncan, a 50-year-old grandmother, was fatally shot while celebrating her sister's birthday.

The shooting occurred outside a restaurant on Grace Bay Road around 10 p.m. on Saturday. According to the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, two individuals, including Duncan, died at the scene, while another victim was hospitalized. Authorities have stated that there is no indication that Duncan or the other victims were targeted in the attack.

Duncan's family shared that she was enjoying the second day of a three-day vacation, attending a rooftop party at Aziza Restaurant in Providenciales. Reports indicate that an altercation downstairs preceded the gunfire, and Duncan was tragically struck by a stray bullet. Her son recounted the chaotic scene to ABC 7 Chicago, describing people shouting and urging others to take cover.

Duncan had dedicated 20 years of service to the Cook County Department of Corrections, recently transitioning to a role at Cermak Health Services. The Cook County Sheriff's office expressed their deep sorrow and offered condolences to Duncan's family, highlighting her commitment to her community and her role as a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

Duncan is survived by her two daughters, son, and granddaughter. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and no arrests have been announced as of yet.
