Former George W. Bush advisor Karl Rove has criticized Florida Governor Ron DeSantis' recent campaign video targeting Donald Trump's stance on LGBTQ+ issues as a strategic misstep. The video, shared on Twitter at the close of Pride Month, highlights Trump's past support for the LGBTQ+ community, juxtaposing it with DeSantis's own legislative actions, such as restricting discussions of gender identity in schools.
Rove, speaking on Fox News' "The Story," expressed bewilderment at the video's messaging, especially given the widespread public support for DeSantis' policies on gender and education. He argued that while DeSantis' actions on these issues resonate with many, the video's tone appears to celebrate attacks on the LGBTQ+ community, which could alienate potential supporters.

DeSantis, known for his conservative stances, has gained significant traction by signing legislation barring biological males from competing in women's sports and limiting classroom discussions about gender identity in early elementary grades. Rove believes DeSantis should focus on promoting these popular policies rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric.
The video drew sharp criticism from various figures, including Ric Grenell, the first openly gay cabinet member, who labeled it "homophobic." DeSantis' campaign spokesperson, Christina Pushaw, defended the video, arguing that opposition to federal recognition of Pride Month should not be equated with homophobia and rejecting identity politics as "divisive and pandering."
Other 2024 presidential hopefuls have also weighed in on the escalating tensions between DeSantis and Trump. Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie characterized their exchanges as a "food fight" unbecoming of political leaders. Rove agreed, pointing to Trump's use of derisive nicknames for DeSantis as further evidence of unproductive political sparring.

The ongoing feud between Trump and Rove adds another layer to the controversy. Trump has frequently criticized Rove, calling him a "pompous fool" for his past critiques of Trump's political strategies. This latest incident further fuels the ongoing tension between the two prominent Republican figures.
