A medical team from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was assaulted in Khartoum, Sudan, while delivering supplies to the Turkish Hospital. The 18-member team was stopped, questioned about their presence, and then physically assaulted, including beatings and whippings. One driver was briefly detained. This incident raises serious concerns about MSF's ability to continue operating at the Turkish Hospital, one of only two functioning hospitals in the capital.
Sudan has been embroiled in conflict since mid-April between the military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The fighting has transformed Khartoum into a warzone and sparked ethnic violence in Darfur. The death toll exceeds 3,000, with over 6,000 injured, though the actual figures are likely much higher. The International Organization for Migration reports over 3 million people have been displaced internally or fled the country.
The RSF appears to have gained control in Khartoum, occupying homes and civilian properties for operational bases. The Sudanese army has retaliated with airstrikes and shelling in populated areas. Widespread destruction and looting have been reported, including the targeting of humanitarian facilities. The World Food Program has reported looting at two of its sites.
