Since joining Georgetown University's faculty as a Distinguished University Professor in 2023, Dr. Anthony Fauci, former Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has yet to teach a formal course. While Georgetown bestows this title upon faculty with "extraordinary accomplishments," a review of course catalogs reveals no listings with Fauci as instructor. The university's announcement indicated Fauci would participate in medical and graduate education and engage with students. Instead of traditional teaching, Fauci has focused on lectures, seminars, fireside chats, and individual meetings with students across various schools, including Medicine, Health, Public Policy, Law, and Foreign Service, according to an August interview with The Georgetowner.
In addition to his professorship, Fauci also holds a Distinguished Senior Scholar position at Georgetown's O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law, focusing on "the right to health" and responding to public health concerns.
Fauci's role has drawn attention given recent scrutiny over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly following a congressional report suggesting a lab leak origin and questioning the scientific basis of certain public health measures. The report also criticizes Fauci's role in downplaying the lab-leak theory and his testimony regarding gain-of-function research. Amidst this, reports have emerged about potential preemptive pardons from President Biden for Fauci and others.
Georgetown has not commented on Fauci's professorial role or compensation.
