Elvis Presley's Final Tour: A Bodyguard's Perspective

The iconic Elvis Presley, a name synonymous with rock 'n' roll, captivated audiences with his unique blend of country, rhythm and blues, and rock. His electrifying performances and undeniable charisma earned him a devoted following, solidifying his status as a cultural icon of the 1950s.

However, behind the dazzling stage presence, Elvis faced personal struggles, particularly in the months leading up to his untimely death in August 1977. Author and former bodyguard Ted Pryor offered a glimpse into this period of Elvis's life, describing the physical discomfort the star endured.

Pryor, a world champion kickboxer, joined Elvis's security team due to the singer's interest in martial arts. He recounted Elvis's significant weight gain and the resulting discomfort it caused him, making him averse to physical contact. Pryor's book, "Three-Time World Champ: The Death-Defying True Story of a Kickboxer Turned Drug Smuggler . . . Turned Business Icon," details his experiences working for the King of Rock 'n' Roll.

Pryor and a colleague were recruited to protect Elvis during a US tour. Unbeknownst to them at the time, Elvis was facing financial difficulties due to alleged mismanagement by Colonel Tom Parker. Despite the financial strain, Elvis continued to perform, drawing large crowds and enthusiastic female fans who would often rush the stage, requiring Pryor and his team to intervene.

One particularly memorable incident involved a female fan using a scarf given to her by Elvis to choke Pryor in her attempt to reach the star. Elvis, despite his personal struggles, was known for his generosity towards his bodyguards. Pryor described him as generally "sour," possibly due to personal losses, including the death of his mother and his divorce from Priscilla Presley, but noted that he treated his security team well.

The tour Pryor worked on would ultimately be Elvis's last. The news of his death came as a shock to the world, including former President Jimmy Carter, who issued a public statement acknowledging the loss. Pryor reflected on his time with Elvis, remembering the star's kindness and the impact his passing had on those who knew him and the world at large.
