Fast Charging EVs: A Race Against Time

For drivers, time is of the essence, and this holds true whether you're on a racetrack or charging your electric vehicle. Slow charging speeds have long been a barrier for potential EV buyers, but advancements in charging technology are changing the game.

While many EVs still require around 40 minutes to reach an 80% charge at a DC fast charging station, some manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of speed. Tesla, Porsche, Kia, Hyundai, and Lucid all boast models capable of significantly faster charging times.

P3 Group, a consulting firm, conducted a study to determine which EV models recharge the quickest. Focusing on 10 and 20-minute charging sessions, P3 Group's testing aimed to simulate a more realistic charging experience compared to the typical 40-minute benchmark. The study considered the charging curve of each vehicle, acknowledging that charging speeds tend to decrease as the battery nears full capacity to prevent damage.

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6 with rear-wheel drive and a long-range battery emerged as the winner in the 10-minute challenge, adding an impressive 127 miles of range. Trailing closely behind were the Lucid Air GT at 124 miles and the Tesla Model S Plaid at 123 miles. On the other end of the spectrum, the Ford F-150 Lightning (extended range) and the Ford Mustang Mach-E (extended range, rear-wheel drive) managed only 59 and 62 miles, respectively.

In the 20-minute test, the Lucid Air GT took the lead, achieving 208 miles of range. The Tesla Model S Plaid secured second place with 193 miles, followed by the Kia EV6 at 191 miles. The Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E reached 109 and 110 miles, respectively.

Edmunds, an automotive marketplace, plans to collaborate with P3 Group to incorporate this charging efficiency data into its vehicle evaluations. Alistair Weaver, Edmunds’ vice president of editorial, emphasized the significance of range and charging efficiency for prospective EV buyers. This partnership aims to furnish car shoppers with essential information to make informed decisions.
