Following several days of widespread unrest triggered by the fatal police shooting of a 17-year-old, French President Emmanuel Macron has appealed for calm and a return to order. Macron emphasized the need for national unity and addressing the underlying issues that led to the violence, speaking from Pau, a city in southern France. He acknowledged the significant impact of recent events on the nation, stating, "We all lived through an important moment in the life of our nation."
The officer involved in the shooting of Nahel Merzouk remains in custody, facing charges of voluntary homicide. A judge denied the officer's request for release pending further investigation. While Macron stressed the need to address the root causes of the unrest, he did not elaborate on specifics. Previously, he has pointed to the role of social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat, as well as parental responsibility, in escalating the violence that has affected approximately 500 communities across France.

However, community members and activists in the affected low-income neighborhoods argue that the tragic incident highlights systemic issues of police brutality and racial discrimination within France. They contend that Merzouk's North African descent played a role in the incident.
