Government Spending on Migrant and Refugee Support Exceeds Billion Over Four Years

A recent report reveals that over four fiscal years, more than $22 billion in government grants were allocated to support migrants and refugees. The Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), responsible for the care of unaccompanied migrant children and refugees, distributed these funds to non-profit organizations. The watchdog group, Open the Books, uncovered a significant increase in these grants. In FY2021, $2.4 billion was distributed, rising to $3.4 billion in FY2022. A substantial jump to $10 billion occurred in FY2023, followed by a decrease to $4.2 billion in FY2024.

This surge in funding coincided with the migrant crisis at the southern border during the period from 2021 to 2024. The allocated funds supported various programs, including assistance for migrants saving for homes and vehicles, business and personal loans, legal aid, and cultural orientation. Critics have questioned the allocation of such substantial sums, particularly given other pressing needs within the country.

This disclosure coincides with increased government scrutiny of spending, particularly concerning migrant support. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been leading these investigations. In a related incident, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently reclaimed $59 million in FEMA funds intended for migrant housing in New York City hotels and dismissed four FEMA employees connected to the payments. A DHS spokesperson emphasized the commitment to ensuring that all spending aligns with the interests and safety of American citizens.
