A shootout at the U.S. consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, resulted in the death of a security guard and the attacker early Thursday morning. According to Saudi police, the gunman arrived in a vehicle, exited, and then opened fire on security personnel outside the consulate. The security officers returned fire, ultimately killing the assailant after multiple rounds of gunfire were exchanged.

A Nepalese security guard was injured during the exchange and transported for medical treatment but unfortunately succumbed to his wounds. The U.S. Department of State confirmed that no U.S. citizens were harmed in the incident and stated they are in contact with Saudi authorities as they investigate the matter. The State Department also indicated there are no changes to current travel advisories for the region.
