A 51-year-old Arizona man, Alberto Gomez, faces multiple charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault and related offenses in DuPage County, Illinois. His arrest stems from a 2001 cold case where DNA evidence linked him to the crime. Gomez allegedly broke into a woman's apartment in West Chicago, physically assaulted her, and committed sexual assault. The breakthrough came in 2022 when West Chicago police received a DNA match from a sample taken at the time of the assault, connecting it to Gomez's DNA, which was collected during his detention for illegal re-entry into the United States. DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin emphasized the commitment to pursuing justice for victims, regardless of how much time has passed. Gomez, who was residing in the West Chicago-Warrenville area during the time of the assault, has been in federal custody since November and was recently transferred to the DuPage County Jail. He is scheduled for a court appearance on August 16, 2023. Authorities encourage anyone with information related to the case or Gomez to contact the West Chicago Police Department.
