Invictus Games Winter Debut Sparks Controversy Over Laser Rifles

Prince Harry's Invictus Games is making its winter debut in Vancouver, Canada, from February 8th to 16th, 2025. However, a significant change to the biathlon event has ignited controversy. Traditionally combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, the competition will now utilize "optic" (infrared beam) rifles instead of traditional firearms.

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 organization explained that optic rifles enhance safety, reliability, and accessibility for athletes of varying skill levels, including those with visual impairments. They also highlighted the broader usage of this technology in competitions like the Paralympic Games. This change also aims to minimize safety concerns and environmental impact associated with live ammunition, which will benefit future users.

However, this decision has drawn criticism, particularly from some competitors. U.S. Marine veteran Christopher Bryde, who served in Afghanistan and is a double amputee, reported experiencing issues with the optic rifles during trials. He noted malfunctions related to cold weather and snow obstructing the lenses and targets. The Invictus Games responded by assuring that the equipment will be meticulously maintained to ensure optimal performance during both training and competition.

Online, the shift to laser rifles has been met with mixed reactions. Some have questioned the timing of the change, while others have criticized it as a "woke" idea. Negative comments on social media labeled the decision "ridiculous liberal nonsense." This isn't the first time such a change has been implemented; the Paris 2024 Olympic Pentathlon also opted for lasers instead of traditional pistols.

In the lead-up to the winter games, Prince Harry visited Los Angeles to meet with firefighters and their rescue dogs who had been battling wildfires, highlighting his ongoing commitment to supporting those in need.
