Johnny Damon Discusses Trump Friendship, 2021 DUI, and Political Backlash

Former Major League Baseball player Johnny Damon recently opened up about his friendship with Donald Trump, the public scrutiny he's faced for supporting the former president, and his 2021 DUI arrest in Florida. In an exclusive interview, Damon recounted his initial meeting with Trump during his tenure with the New York Yankees, facilitated through the organization. Shortly after Damon's move from the Boston Red Sox to the Yankees in late 2005, Trump, then a prominent businessman and television personality, extended an invitation for a round of golf at Mar-a-Lago. The golfing outing also included former New York Mets captain David Wright.

Damon also revealed that Trump had encouraged him to reside in one of his properties upon joining the Yankees, a team with which Trump had long-standing ties. However, Damon had already secured accommodation in the Bloomberg Building.

A decade later, Damon participated in the seventh season of "Celebrity Apprentice," where Trump ultimately dismissed him for composing a subpar jingle. Despite this, their bond solidified into a close friendship, which translated into Damon's unwavering political support for Trump. This allegiance, however, drew criticism and necessitated Damon's defense of his stance.

Damon expressed his satisfaction with Trump's return to office, emphasizing his belief in Trump's commitment to the country. He contrasted this with his perception of the previous administration, which he viewed as lacking positive contributions. Damon's outspoken endorsement of Trump in 2016, including an appearance at a Trump rally in Orlando, sparked considerable backlash from left-leaning baseball enthusiasts on social media platforms.

Following Trump's 2016 victory, Damon's steadfast support amidst the criticism led to an opportunity in the political arena. In December 2020, Trump appointed Damon to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition, alongside notable figures like Mariano Rivera, Urban Meyer, Colby Covington, and Troy Vincent. This appointment prompted Damon to contemplate a political career, but his plans were derailed by his February 2021 DUI arrest in Florida. Bodycam footage of the incident revealed an intoxicated Damon suggesting he was being targeted due to his political affiliation. Damon maintained that his support for Trump played a role in the arrest, a claim the arresting officer refuted.
