Avalon Sports released a statement explaining the rescheduling, citing the desire to avoid political division and condemning any form of violence. The statement highlighted Poyer's commitment to positive community impact.
Poyer himself addressed the situation in an Instagram video, expressing disappointment over the politicization of the event. He mentioned the withdrawal of ECMC Foundation, a previous participant, and other golfers, attributing their decisions to the tournament's location. Poyer emphasized his commitment to helping others, regardless of political differences.
ECMC Foundation clarified its role as a beneficiary rather than a sponsor of the event, expressing respect for Poyer's decision and hoping for future collaboration. Poyer also used the opportunity to call for unity and an end to the divisive political climate.
Several of Poyer's teammates, including Gabe Davis, Josh Allen, and Reid Ferguson, publicly supported him. Poyer, a long-time member of the Bills, recently signed a two-year extension with the team. He has earned accolades such as All-Pro first team and Pro Bowler selections.
