Maryland Police Officers Assaulted During Fourth of July Fireworks Arrest

Several Maryland police officers were attacked while apprehending a man for illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July. Around 10:15 p.m., officers in Annapolis responded to reports of gunshots and encountered 22-year-old Yameko Brown igniting an illegal aerial firework. Despite warnings, Brown disregarded the officers and lit the firework. When an officer attempted to arrest him, Brown resisted, pushing the officer to the ground. During the ensuing struggle, one officer sustained an arm injury, and a crowd began to form. As Brown was being escorted to a patrol car, a woman from the crowd attempted to seize an officer's holstered weapon. The officer managed to prevent the disarming, but the woman then fled into the crowd, only to return and assault another officer. The woman escaped again, and while police searched for her, a man assaulted an officer and also fled. Police Chief Edward Jackson condemned the attacks, emphasizing the serious consequences of assaulting and attempting to disarm police officers. Authorities have requested public assistance in identifying the woman and man involved in the assaults. Brown has been charged with multiple offenses, including discharging fireworks without a permit, assault, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He has been released on his own recognizance.
