Neighbor of Gilgo Beach Suspect Rex Heuermann Details Chilling Encounters

For nearly thirty years, Etienne Devilliers lived next door to Rex Heuermann, the prime suspect in the Gilgo Beach murders. In a recent interview, Devilliers recounted several unsettling interactions, painting a picture of a peculiar and isolated individual.

One disturbing incident involved Heuermann peering over the fence at Devilliers' wife while she sunbathed. Devilliers, a retired New York City firefighter, confronted Heuermann about his behavior, describing the conversation as “unpleasant” but not overtly aggressive. Heuermann, who often emphasized his imposing stature, subsequently ceased the leering.

Devilliers characterized Heuermann as “strange and odd,” noting that neighbors often avoided his dilapidated house. Heuermann, seemingly seeking companionship, attempted to befriend Devilliers, inviting him to play cards. However, Devilliers kept his distance.

Devilliers expressed surprise at the accusations against Heuermann, stating that while he found him peculiar, he never perceived him as violent. This contrasts sharply with reports from Suffolk County Police, who discovered an arsenal of over 200 weapons in Heuermann's home. Devilliers recalled seeing a large box being delivered to Heuermann’s house years ago, which Heuermann claimed contained a metal basement door. Investigators now believe the box held a safe for Heuermann’s extensive gun collection.

Devilliers also offered insights into Heuermann’s family life. He described Heuermann’s second wife as reserved, and expressed sympathy for their two children – a special needs son and a quiet daughter – who often performed household chores. Since Heuermann's arrest, the once-peaceful neighborhood has been swarmed by media and onlookers, leaving residents in disbelief.

Devilliers expressed the collective shock of the community, emphasizing the friendly and safe nature of their neighborhood.
