New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu Will Not Seek Re-election

New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu has announced he will not run for an unprecedented fifth term in 2024. The popular Republican governor, a frequent presence on national news, shared his decision with supporters via email, stating, "After discussions with Valerie and the kids and much consideration, I have decided not to run for another term as Governor in 2024. This was no easy decision as I truly love serving as Governor."

Sununu emphasized that "Public service should never be a career," and expressed confidence that another Republican is ready to lead the state. He highlighted his accomplishments during his tenure, including achieving the lowest unemployment rate, implementing tax cuts, investing in housing, expanding school choice, and protecting Second Amendment rights.

Sununu's decision follows his recent choice to forgo a 2024 presidential bid, a possibility he had seriously considered for over a year. He had previously indicated a decision about his governorship would come this summer, after consulting with his family.

With Sununu stepping aside, the race for the New Hampshire governorship is now open. Two Democrats, Executive Councilor Cinde Warmington and Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig, have already launched campaigns. On the Republican side, former Senator Kelly Ayotte, former State Senate President Chuck Morse, and Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut were all potential candidates if Sununu declined to run again. Following Sununu's announcement, Morse declared his candidacy, while Ayotte hinted at an upcoming announcement.

Reactions to Sununu's decision have been mixed. Republican leaders praised his service, while New Hampshire Democrats criticized his policies and expressed hope for a change in direction for the state.
