The boy's father, Murtadah Mohammad, had been in custody since January, facing charges of assault, child endangerment, and evidence tampering. With the upgraded charge of second-degree murder, the previous charges are expected to be dismissed. Mr. Mohammad is currently being represented by the public defender's office. No specific attorney has been publicly assigned to his case yet.
