Public Tip Leads to Arrest of UnitedHealth CEO Murder Suspect

A crucial tip from the public, relayed through the San Francisco Police Department to the FBI, played a pivotal role in identifying and apprehending Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. This information comes from an FBI source in New York City.

The tip, received after the December 4th shooting in Midtown Manhattan, significantly aided the FBI's investigation, culminating in the arrest of the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate. The FBI confirmed their collaboration with the NYPD, stating, "FBI New York conducted standard investigative procedures and shared this and other leads with the New York City Police Department to support their investigation. The widespread circulation of Mangione's photos by law enforcement ultimately led a citizen to identify him, resulting in his apprehension by the Altoona Police Department."

This revelation provides further insight into the investigative process that led to Mangione's identification. Fox News had previously reported that a San Francisco police investigator recognized Mangione from a wanted poster and alerted the FBI.

The poster, obtained by Fox News, displays a photograph of a smiling Mangione and indicates that he was reported missing on November 18th, approximately two weeks before Thompson's death. The poster was circulated among agencies as part of the missing person protocol.

A police source revealed that Mangione's mother filed the missing person report, stating she last contacted him around July 1st. She mentioned he worked at TrueCar, an online automotive sales platform. The San Francisco address she provided for his workplace was permanently closed, and no phone number was available. Mangione’s mother indicated she was unaware of any other locations he frequented in San Francisco.
