New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin and New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin, usually rivals on the ice, were seen together in a recent offseason workout. A video surfaced on Shesterkin's Instagram story showing the two Russian hockey stars pushing an SUV through a parking lot.
Their camaraderie might surprise some given the intense competition between the Rangers and Islanders. However, Shesterkin and Sorokin share a long-standing friendship that predates their NHL careers. Reports indicate they've known each other since their teenage years playing hockey in Russia, and their bond extends beyond the rink, with Sorokin being the godfather of Shesterkin's son.
This offseason comes after a successful year for Sorokin. He recently signed a lucrative eight-year contract extension with the Islanders, fresh off a Vezina Trophy finalist nomination and a return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for his team. His impressive .924 save percentage placed him among the league's top goaltenders. Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello expressed relief at securing Sorokin's long-term future with the team.
While Shesterkin also had a strong individual season, posting a 37-13-8 record and a .916 save percentage, the Rangers experienced a disappointing first-round playoff exit against the New Jersey Devils. Both goalies represented the Metropolitan Division in the NHL All-Star Game.
