After years of witnessing a historic border crisis unfold, Americans are finally seeing a shift in approach. The previous administration's attempts to deflect blame while the situation deteriorated contrasted sharply with the realities faced by border communities.
Representing Texas' 23rd Congressional District, which encompasses 823 miles of the Texas-Mexico border, I've seen firsthand the strain on communities like Eagle Pass, Del Rio, and El Paso. These areas were overwhelmed by the surge in illegal immigration, with resources stretched thin and daily life disrupted.
Early in the previous administration, I extended an offer of collaboration to address border security and create a more effective immigration system. Unfortunately, this was met with resistance and a lack of genuine interest in finding solutions. The consequences were severe, culminating in the 2021 Del Rio crisis where thousands of Haitians overwhelmed the small border town's capacity, creating a humanitarian emergency.

Similar crises unfolded in Eagle Pass and El Paso, forcing the temporary closure of pedestrian bridges and rail crossings due to the sheer volume of illegal crossings. While border communities struggled, the federal government's focus remained on sanctuary cities, leaving those on the front lines to grapple with the consequences.
The new administration has taken swift action, prioritizing border security and immigration reform. Measures include designating dangerous cartels and gangs as terrorist organizations, reinstating the Remain in Mexico policy, and increasing deportations of criminal aliens. These actions demonstrate a commitment to enforcing the rule of law and addressing the concerns of Americans who want to see effective border management.

With renewed cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies, and a clear directive from the new administration, there is a sense of optimism. The focus has shifted from appeasing special interest groups to addressing the needs of the nation as a whole.
While addressing the immediate crisis is crucial, we must also tackle the long-term issues within our immigration system. With leadership that prioritizes the rule of law, we have an opportunity to enact meaningful reforms that uphold our values and ensure a secure and prosperous future for America. This means creating a system that attracts and integrates those who contribute to our nation's success while maintaining order and security.
