Santorini Earthquake Swarm Prompts Thousands to Evacuate Greek Island

A series of earthquakes near the Greek island of Santorini has led to the evacuation of thousands of people from the popular tourist destination. Since last week, hundreds of tremors, characterized by Santorini Mayor Nikos Zorzos as a "seismic swarm," have rattled the island. Zorzos, citing conversations with seismologists, suggested this activity could persist for several weeks before subsiding, potentially culminating in a larger quake or a gradual decrease in intensity.

Over 200 undersea earthquakes, some reaching magnitude 5, have been recorded in the volcanic region since Friday. As of Sunday, approximately 9,000 individuals have departed Santorini, with additional flights and ferries deployed to manage the exodus.

In response to the ongoing seismic activity, Santorini officials have implemented several precautionary measures, including canceling public gatherings, imposing travel restrictions to the island, and prohibiting construction in specific zones. While some older buildings have sustained cracks, no injuries have been reported. Santorini's resident population is around 15,500.

Efthimios Lekkas, leading the Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, noted that the epicenter of the quakes is shifting north, away from Santorini, and clarified there's no link to the area's dormant volcanoes. He stated the seismic activity could continue for days or weeks, highlighting the unpredictability of the situation.
