A California Highway Patrol officer made an unexpected discovery during a routine traffic stop in Madera County. A 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost, pulled over for speeding on Highway 99, was found to have a surprising passenger: a spider monkey.
The young primate, estimated to be just one month old, was taken into custody by animal control and subsequently transferred to the Oakland Zoo for proper care. Owning primates as pets is illegal in California.
The driver, 27-year-old Ali Mused Adel Mohamed, was also determined to be driving under the influence. He was arrested for DUI and possession of cannabis with intent to sell.
Mr. Mohamed now faces multiple charges, including possession of an exotic animal, related to this unusual incident.
