US Invests .7 Billion in Zero-Emission Buses Across 46 States and Territories

The U.S. Department of Transportation is investing heavily in cleaner public transportation, awarding nearly $1.7 billion in grants to support the purchase of zero- and low-emission buses across 46 states and territories. This funding, sourced from the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure bill, will facilitate the acquisition of approximately 1,700 American-made buses, with almost half being zero-emission vehicles. This initiative aligns with the Biden administration's focus on increasing the use of electric vehicles to combat climate change.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized the significance of this investment, highlighting the vital role buses play in the daily lives of millions of Americans. He noted the unprecedented scale of funding dedicated to modernizing public transit with cleaner buses.

This announcement marks the second round of grants for buses and related infrastructure, bringing the total investment to $3.3 billion. The government anticipates distributing an additional $5 billion over the next three years, demonstrating a continued commitment to sustainable transportation.

The Biden administration anticipates that the new buses will not only improve air quality by reducing diesel exhaust but also offer lower maintenance costs.

The high demand for this funding is evident in the 475 project proposals received, totaling approximately $8.7 billion.

The grants will benefit a diverse range of locations, from major metropolitan areas to smaller communities. For instance, the Seattle area will receive $33.5 million for 30 electric buses and charging stations, while Washington, D.C.'s transit authority will get $104 million to electrify a bus garage and purchase around 100 electric buses. Funding also extends to places like Iowa City, Iowa, and the Seneca Nation in Western New York, demonstrating a nationwide commitment to cleaner public transportation.
