Waymo, a leader in autonomous driving, has joined forces with Zeekr, an electric vehicle manufacturer, to create a cutting-edge robotaxi designed specifically for ride-hailing services. This partnership leverages Zeekr's advanced electric vehicle platform, the Zeekr RT, as the foundation. Waymo then integrates its sixth-generation Waymo Driver, a comprehensive autonomous driving system, to complete the vehicle.

Advanced Sensor Technology
The Waymo Driver equips the Zeekr RT with a sophisticated sensor suite, including 13 cameras, four lidar units, six radar sensors, and external audio receivers. This comprehensive system provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle's environment. A unique sensor-cleaning system, featuring miniature wipers and specialized spray nozzles, ensures optimal sensor performance in all weather conditions. This technology allows the robotaxi to operate effectively day and night, enhancing safety and reliability.

Rapid Development and Testing
The Zeekr RT moved quickly from design to production at Zeekr's CEVT facility in Gothenburg, Sweden. Waymo has been conducting real-world testing of prototype vehicles in San Francisco and Phoenix, using human safety drivers. Mass production is scheduled to commence later this year, with initial deliveries to Waymo for final testing and validation.

Future of Autonomous Ride-Hailing
Waymo plans to integrate the Zeekr RT into its Waymo One ride-hailing service, which operates in cities like Phoenix and San Francisco. The goal is to eventually deploy these vehicles in fully driverless mode, representing a significant advancement in autonomous transportation. This cost-effective and passenger-focused vehicle could provide Waymo with a competitive advantage in the expanding robotaxi market.
