Wheaton College has retracted its initial congratulatory message to alumnus Russell Vought following his Senate confirmation as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. The college's decision to celebrate Vought's achievement was met with a wave of online criticism, prompting the institution to delete the post.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Wheaton College explained that while it typically acknowledges alumni reaching high levels of government, the political climate surrounding Vought's appointment sparked significant online concern. The college emphasized its non-partisan stance, stating that it does not endorse political candidates and remains focused on its Christian mission.

Vought reacted to the college's decision with a succinct "SAD!" on Twitter. Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) criticized Wheaton, calling the move "ridiculous" and arguing that Vought's accomplishments should be celebrated. Hillsdale College, which also congratulated Vought, seemingly responded to Wheaton's action by tweeting that it would not delete its congratulatory post.

Wheaton College clarified that deleting the post was not an apology for its initial congratulations but rather a response to the influx of over 1,000 hostile and unchristian comments directed at Vought. The college aimed to avoid further online distractions and political disputes.

Vought, who previously served in the Trump administration, was confirmed by a party-line vote, with all Senate Republicans in favor and all Democrats opposed. Following his confirmation, Vought expressed gratitude to the President, the Senate, and those who prayed for him.
