A unique housing development is taking root near Charlotte, North Carolina, aiming to cultivate a vibrant community rooted in shared American values. Known as 1776 Gastonia, this 55+ community encourages residents to embrace patriotism by displaying the American flag and upholding the principles enshrined in the nation's founding documents.
Brock Fankhauser, the visionary behind 1776 Gastonia, envisions a neighborhood where the American dream of homeownership intertwines with a strong sense of national pride. He believes that a renewed focus on patriotism can serve as a unifying force in a nation facing challenges and divisions. The community asks residents to pledge their commitment to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, along with supporting the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Mutual respect and a shared commitment to the neighborhood's future are also emphasized.
A key element of 1776 Gastonia is the prominent display of the American flag. Each home will come with a flag, integrated into the architectural design, symbolizing the shared values of the community. While there are no strict penalties for those who choose not to display the flag, the emphasis is on the voluntary commitment residents make to one another.
The project has generated significant interest, with nearly 200 inquiries received even before the official listing of the 43 homes. This enthusiastic response suggests a resonance with the community's core values and a desire for a neighborhood defined by shared principles. Fankhauser expressed surprise at the level of interest, seeing it as a validation of the project's concept. He hopes that 1776 Gastonia will inspire a resurgence of patriotism across the country.
In partnership with Building Homes for Heroes, 1776 Gastonia will also provide a mortgage-free home to an injured veteran and their family, further demonstrating its commitment to honoring American values and supporting those who have served the nation. Construction on this home is set to begin soon, with the family expected to move in early 2024.
