A popular beachfront hotel in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, came under attack by extremists on Friday evening, trapping numerous civilians inside. Security forces swiftly responded to the scene at the Pearl Beach hotel, working to free those still trapped within the building.
Somalia's National News Agency reported that a significant number of civilians were successfully rescued as the fighting continued into Friday night. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding casualties.
Al-Shabab, the al-Qaida affiliate in East Africa, has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group has a history of targeting hotels and other prominent locations in Mogadishu, often initiating their assaults with suicide bombings. The Pearl Beach hotel, situated near the Turkish Embassy, is a known gathering spot for government officials.

Eyewitness accounts paint a picture of the chaotic scene. Hassan Abdirahman, who was at the hotel restaurant during the attack, described hearing gunshots originating from the beach, followed by a powerful explosion. He managed to escape and reported seeing damaged vehicles lining the street.
Another witness, Mulki Osman, recounted how he and his friends immediately sought cover within the restaurant upon hearing the explosions and gunfire. He expressed concern for his friends who remained trapped inside, while expressing relief at his own rescue by security personnel.
Lido Beach, the location of the Pearl Beach hotel, is a bustling hub of activity, especially on Friday nights. It's a popular spot for locals to enjoy the weekend, frequenting coffee shops and ice cream parlors.
