Biden Seen with Book Critical of Israel's History with Palestinians

President Biden was recently observed carrying a book that characterizes Israel as a colonial force in the context of Palestinian resistance. This sighting comes despite Biden's reiterated support for the Jewish state.

The book in question, "The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine," by Rashid Khalidi, was seen in Biden's possession as he left a Nantucket bookstore. Khalidi, a Columbia University professor emeritus, confirmed the sighting to the New York Post, expressing that such recognition was "four years too late."

The book frames the history of Palestine as a colonial struggle against the indigenous population, with various actors seeking to displace them from their homeland. It is unclear whether Biden purchased the book or received it as a gift.

Khalidi has been critical of Israel, particularly regarding the humanitarian situation in Gaza following the Hamas attacks in October 2023. He has questioned Israel's political objectives in the region.

While Biden has consistently affirmed his support for Israel, his administration has faced criticism from both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups. Some Israeli supporters have criticized conditions placed on U.S. aid, while pro-Palestinian groups have condemned civilian casualties in Gaza. Reports suggest Biden has also expressed private criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Published in 2020, Khalidi's book critiques the Trump administration's policies, including moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem and recognizing Israel's annexation of the Golan Heights. The book also highlights what Khalidi describes as discriminatory Israeli policies against Palestinians.

Khalidi draws parallels to other historical settler-colonial conflicts, suggesting possible outcomes ranging from subjugation of the native population to the colonizer's expulsion or a negotiated compromise. He also praises the first Palestinian intifada as a victory against oppression.
