While scorpion stings are generally painful, they are seldom fatal, according to the Mayo Clinic. The bark scorpion is the sole species in the United States with venom potent enough to cause severe symptoms. Globally, there are over 2,000 scorpion species, with about 100 possessing venom capable of causing death. Typical symptoms of a scorpion sting include intense pain, numbness, tingling, swelling, and warmth at the sting site. Similar to bee and wasp stings, allergic reactions can occur, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis.
