Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has launched a scathing attack on former President Donald Trump, labeling him the "cheapest person" he's encountered and criticizing Trump's use of campaign funds for legal expenses.
In a recent interview, Christie, who is also vying for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, accused Trump of misusing donations intended for his campaign to cover his personal legal battles. Christie highlighted Trump's significant wealth and argued that he should be using his own resources, rather than relying on contributions from supporters.
Christie urged Trump to pledge to stop using campaign funds for legal fees, emphasizing that using public donations for personal legal battles is shameful, especially for the wealthiest candidate in the race.
Following the interview, Christie quickly capitalized on his remarks, launching a fundraising effort and reiterating his accusations against Trump on social media. He posed a question to his followers: "What do you call a billionaire who refuses to pay his lawyers with his own money and instead uses the money of hardworking men and women?" The answer, according to Christie: "Donald Trump, Cheap S.O.B., All of the above."
Christie further accused Trump of a long-standing pattern of exploiting working-class individuals, characterizing his campaign as the "newest version of an old con."
The New York Times recently reported that Trump diverted funds from his campaign to his Save America PAC, which has been covering his legal expenses related to recent federal charges.
Christie's criticisms extended to Trump's character and leadership, particularly in light of the recent charges. Speaking at the Faith and Freedom Conference, Christie stated that Trump has "let us down" and is unwilling to take responsibility for his actions, calling it a "failure of leadership." Although he anticipated a negative reaction from the largely pro-Trump audience, Christie maintained that it was essential for them to hear the truth.
