Drew Barrymore Clarifies Martha Stewart Interaction, Believes Initial Awkwardness is Resolved

Actress and talk show host Drew Barrymore recently addressed the widely circulated clip of an awkward interaction with Martha Stewart from a November episode of "The Drew Barrymore Show." During a guest appearance on "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen," Barrymore explained her perspective on the moment where Stewart seemingly pushed her away. Barrymore suggested the internet misconstrued the interaction, believing it was playful teasing rather than genuine annoyance. She expressed confidence that Stewart now holds her in high regard, contrasting it with her initial uncertainty about Stewart's feelings towards her.

Barrymore's interview style is characterized by her attempts to forge emotional connections with guests, often involving close physical proximity, touching arms, or holding hands. This approach appeared to make Stewart uncomfortable during the November interview. Barrymore, while inquiring about what makes Stewart "soft and gooey," moved closer, even putting her finger in her mouth. Stewart's response of "Treatment" led to further questioning from Barrymore about being "treated like a lady." As Barrymore continued to touch Stewart's arm and back, Stewart playfully pushed her away, remarking, "You’re the wrong gender." Barrymore took the comment in stride, jokingly groaning and laying back on the couch.

Prior to the current season of her show, Barrymore acknowledged her interview style and stated her intention to provide guests with more personal space, recognizing that her tendency for close physical proximity isn't universally appreciated. She admitted the difficulty she experienced maintaining distance during the pandemic, emphasizing her preference for being around people.
