The recent wave of layoffs at ESPN has prominent figures like Stephen A. Smith, host of "First Take" and "The Stephen A. Smith Show," openly contemplating their own job security. During a recent episode of his show, Smith commented on the cuts, stating, "This isn’t the end. More is coming. And yes, ladies and gentlemen, I could be next."

Smith's remarks follow ESPN's announcement of job cuts affecting around 20 on-air personalities, including notable names like Jeff Van Gundy and Jalen Rose. The network explained that these cost-saving measures are necessary in the current environment and will help them meet financial targets. Smith specifically expressed his disappointment regarding Jalen Rose's departure, highlighting their positive working relationship on "NBA Countdown."

ESPN's statement emphasized the difficulty of these decisions, acknowledging the significant contributions of the affected individuals. The company clarified that these cuts are driven by financial considerations rather than performance evaluations.

Smith, a prominent voice in sports media since joining ESPN in 2003, offered a sobering perspective, reminding his audience, particularly Black individuals, not to take anything for granted. He invoked the analogy of white people catching a cold while Black people catch pneumonia to illustrate the disproportionate impact of economic downturns. These layoffs come as Disney, ESPN's parent company, implements cost-cutting measures, including 7,000 job cuts, as announced by CEO Bob Iger in February.
