The incident began when the victim, celebrating a birthday with her boyfriend and 5-year-old daughter in a motel room, ordered pizza from a nearby Marco's Pizza. The victim tried to pay the $33.10 bill with a $50 note and requested change. Alvelo reportedly claimed the business didn't provide change, leading the victim to search for smaller bills. After finally paying and providing a $2 tip, the victim recounted Alvelo reacting with visible displeasure.

Later that night, after the victim's boyfriend and daughter were asleep, Alvelo allegedly returned to the motel room with an unidentified male accomplice carrying a firearm. The two forced their way into the room. The armed man reportedly confined the victim's boyfriend to the bathroom after breaking his phone, while Alvelo searched the victim's belongings. Alvelo, armed with a knife, then attacked the victim, stabbing her multiple times. The assault reportedly ended when the male accomplice signaled it was time to leave. The victim sustained 14 stab wounds, underwent surgery for a punctured lung, and discovered she was several weeks pregnant while at the hospital. She is currently in stable condition.
