A sports gambling scandal has engulfed the Fresno State men's basketball program, with allegations that two players bet on games in which they participated. Forward Mykell Robinson has been removed from the team, while guards Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins are suspended pending investigation.
According to reports, Robinson and Weaver wagered that their team would fall short of projected points and rebounds, a direct violation of NCAA regulations. These rules strictly forbid athletes, coaches, and staff from any involvement in sports betting activities, encompassing amateur, collegiate, and professional levels.
Head coach Vance Walberg reportedly uncovered the alleged gambling and alerted the university, prompting an internal investigation that subsequently escalated to an NCAA probe. Fresno State has confirmed that Weaver and Collins are withheld from competition while the eligibility review is ongoing.
The absence of these key players significantly impacts the Bulldogs. Weaver and Collins are among the team's leading scorers, averaging 12.5 and 12.0 points per game, respectively. Collins also leads the team in assists with 4.7 per game. Robinson has been absent from the team since January 11th.
The Bulldogs are currently on a 10-game losing streak, holding a 5-23 record, the worst in the program’s history. With a depleted roster, they recently fielded only seven players in a close overtime loss. Fresno State Athletics has declined further comment on the situation.
