In a closely contested Senate vote, Pete Hegseth has been confirmed as the new Secretary of Defense. The final tally was 50-50, requiring Vice President JD Vance to break the tie. Following the vote, Republican lawmakers lauded Hegseth, describing him as a much-needed reformer with a deep commitment to military personnel. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) praised Hegseth's intellect and dedication to service members, highlighting his support for strengthening the military and his firm stance against adversaries like Iran. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) expressed pride in his vote for Hegseth, calling him the necessary catalyst for change within the Department of Defense. Other Republican senators, including Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), Mike Lee (R-UT), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), also voiced their enthusiastic support for the new defense secretary, emphasizing his potential to enhance military readiness and prioritize the needs of service members.

Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) also joined the chorus of congratulations, expressing confidence in Hegseth's leadership. Greene asserted that Hegseth's appointment strengthens national security, while Luna simply celebrated the confirmation of the "NEW secretary of defense."

Leading up to the vote, Democrats had raised concerns about Hegseth's qualifications and suitability for the position. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) questioned Hegseth's financial management history and whether he possessed the necessary experience to lead the military. Senator Adam Schiff (D-CA) echoed these concerns, stating that Hegseth lacked the experience, judgment, and character required for the role.

Hegseth's past, including his admitted infidelity, allegations of sexual assault, and prior comments opposing women in combat, has been subject to scrutiny. Hegseth has addressed these issues, acknowledging his past infidelity while emphasizing his commitment to his current wife, denying the assault allegations, and clarifying his stance on women in combat, stating he supports equal standards for men and women in the military. He has also pledged to abstain from alcohol while serving as defense secretary.
