An 18-year-old Oregon man received a life sentence for the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl, but a controversial state law could drastically reduce his time in prison. Daniel Ryan Gore, who was 16 at the time of the crime, might be eligible for release in less than ten years due to Oregon's Senate Bill 1008, enacted five years ago.
This leniency has drawn sharp criticism from Washington County Senior Deputy District Attorney John Gerhard, who prosecuted the case. According to Gerhard, even the judge presiding over the case expressed surprise at the protections afforded by SB 1008. Gerhard argues that Gore, as a violent offender, should spend the rest of his life incarcerated for his crimes.
Gore was convicted last month for the 2022 rape and murder of 13-year-old Milana Li in Beaverton, Oregon. Authorities say Gore lured Li into a wooded area, assaulted her, and then abandoned her body in a creek. Although a minor at the time of the offense, he was deemed fit to stand trial as an adult due to the heinous nature of the crime. His sentencing took place on Monday.
