Hegseth's Defense Team Rebuts New Allegations Amidst Pentagon Confirmation Bid

Former Fox News contributor Pete Hegseth's nomination for Secretary of Defense has encountered new challenges with the emergence of an affidavit from his former sister-in-law, Danielle Dietrich. Hegseth's attorney, Timothy C. Parlatore, has addressed the Senate Armed Services Committee, aiming to counter Dietrich's claims and maintain his client's suitability for the position.

Dietrich's affidavit, obtained by Fox News, alleges that Hegseth struggled with alcohol abuse and sometimes caused his ex-wife, Samantha, to feel unsafe. While Dietrich recounted specific incidents, she acknowledged not personally witnessing any physical or sexual abuse. The affidavit also includes accounts of alleged excessive drinking by Hegseth.

Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the committee's ranking member, expressed concern over the allegations, stating they warrant a thorough investigation and could potentially disqualify Hegseth from the position. Conversely, Senator Roger Wicker (R-MS), the committee chairman, affirmed his continued support for Hegseth's nomination.

Parlatore, in his letter to the committee, argued that Dietrich's claims are largely based on hearsay and contradict Samantha's sworn statements during divorce proceedings. He further highlighted that the FBI had already investigated similar allegations from Dietrich and found them unsubstantiated. Parlatore characterized the affidavit as a politically motivated attempt to undermine Hegseth's confirmation.

Dietrich's lawyer, Leita Walker, declined further comment, requesting privacy for her client. Republican senators, including Rick Scott (R-FL), criticized Democrats for obstructing the confirmation process, emphasizing that President Trump's electoral victory should be respected.
