Hochul Remains Neutral on Cuomo's NYC Mayoral Bid

Governor Kathy Hochul refrained from commenting on Andrew Cuomo's suitability for the New York City mayoralty following his recent announcement to run for the position. During an interview on CNN's "The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer," Hochul emphasized her commitment to collaborating with whoever the voters choose. She stated her focus remains on governing the state and addressing its various challenges, many stemming from federal policies.

Hochul reiterated that the choice of mayor is ultimately up to New York City voters and not her purview. She expressed her admiration for anyone willing to undertake the challenges of running for office and underscored her desire to work with a mayor who prioritizes the city's needs and collaborates with her on key issues like public safety, homelessness, and illegal cannabis shops.

When pressed about her past criticisms of Cuomo's alleged behavior, Hochul maintained her neutral stance, emphasizing the voters' role in the election. She highlighted her own track record of supporting the city, citing investments and efforts to address subway crime and homelessness. Hochul affirmed her willingness to work with whomever is elected, referencing her past collaborations with both Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams.

Cuomo, who resigned as governor in 2021 amid sexual harassment allegations, announced his mayoral bid over the weekend. While he apologized for any behavior perceived as inappropriate, he denied the specific allegations in the Attorney General's report. The upcoming Democratic primary in June 2025 will determine who challenges incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who himself faces re-election challenges amid concerns about crime and homelessness.
