House GOP Accuses Liz Cheney of Witness Tampering in Jan. 6 Investigation

A new report from the House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA), alleges that former Rep. Liz Cheney engaged in witness tampering during her time on the January 6th House Select Committee. The report, released Tuesday, claims Cheney secretly communicated with key witness Cassidy Hutchinson, urging her to switch legal representation and subsequently conducting a private interview in her Capitol hideaway.

The report centers on Hutchinson's testimony, where she recounted allegations of President Trump's behavior on January 6th. These claims were later disputed by other witnesses. The report suggests that Cheney's actions unduly influenced Hutchinson's testimony, which became central to the Select Committee's narrative.

Cheney has vehemently denied the allegations, defending the Select Committee's work and accusing Loudermilk's report of fabricating lies and disregarding evidence. Former committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson echoed Cheney's sentiments, calling the report baseless and politically motivated.

This report follows previous accusations from President Trump that the Jan. 6 committee destroyed evidence, a claim supported by an earlier Loudermilk report alleging the committee deleted records and employed “Hollywood producers” to shape a political narrative. This latest report further alleges the committee failed to archive a substantial volume of data, including interview transcripts and digital files.

Thompson has refuted these claims, stating the committee adhered to House rules and preserved all necessary records, which were subsequently transferred to the Department of Justice and made available to Trump's legal team. He maintains the committee's findings stand on their own merit.

The conflicting accounts presented by Loudermilk's subcommittee and the former Jan. 6 committee members highlight the ongoing political divide surrounding the events of January 6th and the investigations that followed.
