Authorities in Kings Park, Long Island, made a disturbing discovery inside a residence on February 8th. Upon entering the home with a search warrant, they were met with an overwhelming stench of feces, urine, and decay, forcing them to navigate through mounds of hoarded garbage exceeding six feet in height.
The Suffolk County SPCA reported finding 10 deceased animals and 20 others in dire need of care. The animals discovered included 11 sugar gliders (a type of possum) and nine cats. A deceased snake was also located within the home. The surviving animals were reportedly suffering from neglect and were living in unsanitary conditions. In addition to the animals, authorities allegedly uncovered a substantial quantity of drug paraphernalia, including crack cocaine and MDMA.
42-year-old Cazandra Nucci has been charged with multiple misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty for failing to provide a safe and clean environment for the animals. The Town of Smithtown Code Enforcement condemned the house, deeming it unfit for human habitation. Nucci was processed at the Suffolk County Police Department’s 4th Precinct and subsequently released. She is scheduled to appear in court on February 28, 2025. In addition to the animal cruelty charges, Nucci also faces charges related to drug possession and paraphernalia.
The rescued animals are currently being cared for and will be available for adoption soon through the Smithtown Animal Shelter.
