Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Laureate, Temporarily Released from Iranian Prison for Medical Care

Nobel Peace Prize recipient Narges Mohammadi has been granted a temporary release from Tehran's Evin prison to receive essential medical attention. Her husband, Taqi Rahmani, confirmed her release to Reuters, marking a brief respite in her ongoing detention. Mohammadi's lawyer, Mostafa Nili, clarified on X (formerly Twitter) that the suspension of her sentence, authorized by the Tehran Prosecutor's office based on a forensic doctor's evaluation, will last for three weeks. This decision was made in light of her health following recent surgery for tumor removal and a bone graft. While the tumor was benign, ongoing medical monitoring is necessary. Mohammadi is currently serving multiple sentences on charges related to disseminating anti-government propaganda.

This temporary release offers a reprieve for the renowned human rights activist, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her decades-long advocacy for women's rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran. Joergen Watne Frydnes, head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, expressed deep concern for Mohammadi's health and called on Iranian authorities to grant her permanent release and ensure access to appropriate medical care.
