Nikki Haley's Father's Day Reflection: A Tribute to Military Families and Service

This Father's Day carries a different weight for my family and numerous military families across South Carolina. We're bidding farewell to my husband, Michael, as he embarks on a year-long deployment to Africa with the South Carolina Army National Guard. He'll dedicate the next 12 months to safeguarding our family and the freedoms of all Americans.

This isn't Michael's first deployment. In 2013, he served in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The memory of that departure, filled with hugs, kisses, and fervent prayers for his safe return, remains vivid. This week, we relive those same emotions.

Deployments are a year-long prayer for military families. It's a constant thought, from sunrise to sunset. But amidst the worry, a stronger emotion prevails: pride. We express gratitude for their service while praying for their well-being.

Michael follows in the footsteps of countless patriots who have placed the nation's needs above their own. His commitment to defending freedom led him to join the National Guard in 2006, and it continues to drive his service nearly two decades later. Military service demands unwavering readiness, and America deserves nothing less.

During my time as South Carolina's governor, I often jokingly reminded Michael that I was his commander-in-chief. It's a lighthearted reminder of the diverse ways we serve our country. His unwavering support for my service is reciprocated, and it extends to all service members and their families. I deeply respect their sacrifices and want them to feel the nation's gratitude.

Saying goodbye to a loved one deploying is a heart-wrenching experience, even when anticipated. Despite preparing for potential challenges, the moment of farewell evokes a mix of emotions.

Supporting our deployed loved ones takes many forms. Beyond prayers, video calls, and care packages, we honor their service by striving for a strong America. This involves instilling patriotism in our children, ensuring top-tier care for our veterans, and equipping our military with the resources they need to protect our freedom.

Michael and his fellow service members deserve our unwavering support. I pledge to advocate for them every day during his deployment and beyond. This Father's Day, we celebrate Michael's dedication and brace ourselves for the journey ahead. I'm grateful my children have a father who embodies the spirit of service, and I'm thankful for all those who step forward to keep America safe.
