Rodeo Rider's Close Call: Bull Horn Slices Neck in Florida Competition

A heart-stopping moment unfolded at the Conley Invitational rodeo in Palmetto, Florida, as a bull's horn pierced the neck of 24-year-old rider Zachary Naegele, narrowly missing his jugular vein. The incident, captured on video, shows Naegele being thrown from the bull, the horn making contact with his neck as he falls. First responders acted swiftly, applying pressure to the wound before transporting him to the hospital for surgery.

Naegele, a seasoned bull rider since the age of 15, recounted the experience to Fox 13, initially believing he had broken his jaw before realizing the severity of the neck injury. Expressing gratitude for his survival, he emphasized his faith, stating, "It’s a whole new ball game when you ask for another breath." The video footage reveals the dramatic sequence of events, from Naegele's preparation in the chute to the bull's explosive exit and the subsequent injury.

Despite the near-fatal encounter, Naegele initially appeared uninjured after hitting the ground. However, moments later, he clutched his neck in panic as blood spurted from the wound. Deputy Chief Steve Litschauer, with 50 years of experience in public safety, described the rapid medical intervention as one of the most immediate lifesaving events he'd witnessed. The incident highlights the inherent risks of bull riding, often referred to as "the most dangerous eight seconds in sports."

In a GoFundMe campaign established to cover medical expenses, Naegele described the event as a "freak accident," detailing significant blood loss and nerve damage. He underwent plastic surgery to repair his neck and the severed small carotid artery. Despite the trauma, Naegele's passion for bull riding remains undeterred. He acknowledges the constant risk involved, stating, "Whenever I get on, I always know it could be my last time, but you never really think about it when you’re there."
