Star running back Saquon Barkley and the New York Giants were unable to reach a contract extension agreement before the deadline. Barkley will now play the 2023 season under the franchise tag. This unexpected turn of events surprised many Giants fans and NFL observers. Reports indicate that the Giants' final offer was in the range of $11-11.5 million annually over three years, with guaranteed money totaling approximately $22-23 million. This figure reportedly fell just short of Barkley’s desired compensation by a mere $1-2 million.

Barkley expressed his acceptance of the situation on Twitter, simply stating, "It is what it is." The running back's disappointment with the franchise tag was evident, particularly after the Giants secured a long-term deal with quarterback Daniel Jones. Coming off his most productive season since his rookie year, Barkley showcased his value with 1,312 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, and 57 receptions for 338 yards, earning him his second Pro Bowl selection. In June, Barkley clarified his contract expectations, emphasizing that his aim was not to reset the market or demand the highest salary. He sought fair compensation reflective of his contributions both on and off the field. Under the franchise tag, Barkley will earn $10.1 million, placing him among the league's highest-paid running backs, alongside players like Christian McCaffrey, Alvin Kamara, Derrick Henry, and Nick Chubb.
