Trucker's Alleged Bomb Hoax Causes I-85 Shutdown, Sparks Immigration Debate

A traffic stop in South Carolina escalated dramatically when a truck driver, later identified as Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi, allegedly claimed to have an explosive device in his vehicle. This led to a five-hour closure of Interstate 85 as authorities investigated the threat.

The incident, which occurred on January 2nd, began with a routine traffic stop for a missing license plate. Alhendi, 28, was driving a tractor-trailer when he was pulled over by state transport police. Following the bomb threat allegation, law enforcement shut down all six lanes of I-85, causing significant traffic disruption. The Greenville County Sheriff's Office, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the FBI were all involved in the investigation.

After a thorough search, the 18-wheeler was cleared, and the highway reopened. Alhendi was arrested and charged with conveying false information about a bomb threat, breach of peace, and operating a vehicle without a license. An ICE detainer was also issued. According to ICE, Alhendi is a Jordanian national who entered the U.S. legally in 2018 but subsequently violated the terms of his admittance.

The timing of the incident, just a day after a deadly attack in New Orleans, heightened public anxiety. It also drew attention to broader immigration concerns. Some Republican leaders linked the incident to perceived lax immigration policies, while others emphasized the need for stronger enforcement and border security.

Alhendi's employer, Globe Transportation, stated that he had proper work authorization and a clean driving record at the time of hiring. The company expressed surprise at the alleged bomb threat and indicated they had no prior issues with him. Alhendi's attorney declined to comment.

The incident has sparked a debate about immigration policy and border security. State Senator Tom Fernandez called for stricter enforcement of immigration laws, while South Carolina Republican Party Chair Drew McKissick criticized current immigration policies. The case also coincided with announcements from the Trump administration regarding increased deportation efforts and border security measures.

Alhendi was initially granted bond but was later denied bond after his immigration status and the ICE detainer became known. He is currently in custody and awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge.
