Tragically, two young boys lost their lives while fishing near Lake Overholser Dam in northwest Oklahoma City on Monday. The boys were part of a group of four who were fishing near the dam when they were caught in powerful currents released from the open water gates. Two of the boys managed to reach a concrete ledge and were later rescued by firefighters, but the other two were swept underwater.
Rescue efforts commenced immediately, and one boy was found Monday evening, but sadly, he did not survive. The search continued, and the body of the second boy was recovered around 1 a.m. Tuesday. The identities and ages of the victims have not yet been publicly released.
This incident occurred during a period of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Oklahoma City, which resulted in over 200 emergency calls, including downed power lines and multiple water rescues. The Oklahoma City Fire Department emphasized the extreme danger of strong currents near dams, especially when water gates are open.
