NFL Players Resist Potential 18-Game Season Expansion

While the NFL's front office explores the possibility of lengthening the regular season, the players' union isn't on board. Commissioner Roger Goodell recently reiterated his interest in an 18-game season, citing fan demand. However, NFLPA Executive Director Lloyd Howell countered that player well-being is paramount, and an extended season isn't appealing to the players.

Goodell acknowledged the need for balance, stating, "We know fans love football and they want more football. But we have to be incredibly sensitive and smart with the balance and how we deal with that." Howell, on the other hand, emphasized player safety and recovery as major concerns. He stated that in conversations with players over the past two seasons, no one has expressed support for an 18-game schedule, citing the current 17-game season as already too long for many.

Howell highlighted that any changes to the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) would necessitate discussions on various issues, including field conditions and player safety. He also emphasized the financial implications of a longer season, stating that player compensation would need to be revisited if the workload increased. "If I’m asking my workforce to work more, it’s not as simple as I’m gonna fall back on the revenue split that already exists," Howell explained. "There are so many dimensions that hang off the length of the season."

The current CBA, which saw player revenue share rise to 48% and then 48.5% with the implementation of the 17-game schedule, would likely be a focal point in negotiations. Howell's comments suggest that players are prepared to push for a larger share if the season is extended further.
