A recent analysis of Planned Parenthood's financial reports reveals a significant increase in revenue and taxpayer funding, even as the organization's overall services have declined. The Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) examined Planned Parenthood's 2021-2022 annual report, highlighting a $1.9 billion income and over $2.3 billion in net assets, marking a notable rise from the previous year.
Private contributions saw a substantial 20% increase, reaching $694.9 million. Government grants, contracts, and Medicaid reimbursements accounted for $670.4 million, equating to almost $1.9 million daily – a $1 million annual increase. Despite this financial growth, CLI's analysis shows a 17.1% decrease in Planned Parenthood's total services since 2010, while taxpayer funding has climbed by nearly 37.5%.
Although the number of abortions performed by Planned Parenthood decreased slightly to 374,155 in 2020-2021, the organization's revenue continues to soar. This financial trend coincides with increased legal protection for unborn children in several states. Currently, 25 states have enacted laws protecting babies from conception up to 12 weeks, and 27 states mandate parental consent for abortions.
In contrast to Planned Parenthood's declining services, the network of pregnancy resource centers offering alternatives to abortion has expanded significantly, outnumbering Planned Parenthood clinics 14 to one. These centers serve nearly 2 million clients annually, providing substantial support and resources at minimal cost. This stark difference underscores the diverging paths of these organizations, with pregnancy resource centers experiencing growing public support while Planned Parenthood faces scrutiny for its financial gains amid declining service provision.
The CLI report also highlights legislative efforts in various states to support mothers and babies, including Florida's allocation of $25 million for pregnancy resource centers and North Carolina's $160 million investment in childcare, parental leave, and community college assistance for parents. Public opinion, as reflected in a Knights of Columbus–Marist poll, shows significant support for limiting abortion to the first trimester and strong backing for pregnancy resource centers.
Despite this support, numerous attacks and acts of vandalism against pregnancy resource centers have occurred, prompting calls for increased protection from the Biden administration. The fact that abortion constitutes 97% of Planned Parenthood's pregnancy resolution services raises concerns about the limited range of options offered to women. The increasing number of attacks on pro-life organizations and churches emphasizes the ongoing tension surrounding this issue.
