Rep. Moulton Faces Backlash Despite Shift on Transgender Athletes in Women's Sports

Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton has seen a significant increase in fundraising since publicly challenging his party's stance on transgender athletes competing in women's sports. According to The Boston Globe, Moulton raised over half a million dollars between Election Day and the end of 2024, a tenfold increase compared to the same period in 2022. A large portion of these donations were small contributions of $100 or less.

Despite this financial boost, Moulton continues to face criticism and protests. Following the Democrats' losses in the 2024 elections, Moulton voiced his concerns about the party's position on transgender inclusion in sports. This sparked immediate backlash, including a protest outside his office in November. Another demonstration is scheduled for January 28th, organized by Salem City Councilman Kyle Davis, who suggests a potential primary challenge against Moulton in 2026.

Moulton: Progressive backlash 'completely' proves point on Dems

Adding to the complexity, Moulton voted against the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, despite his public statements against transgender inclusion. He joined the majority of Democratic representatives in opposing the bill, citing concerns about potential privacy violations for children. This echoes arguments made by other prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who have raised concerns about the bill potentially enabling inappropriate examinations of young girls.

Public opinion on this issue appears to be largely against allowing transgender athletes in women's sports. A New York Times/Ipsos poll revealed that a significant majority of Americans, including a substantial portion of Democrats, oppose the inclusion of transgender women in women's sports. A separate exit poll conducted after the 2024 election indicated that this issue resonated with moderate voters, with many considering it a key factor in their voting decisions.

Moulton's position highlights the ongoing debate within the Democratic party and the broader public discourse surrounding transgender rights and women's sports. His recent fundraising success suggests that his stance may resonate with some voters, while the continued protests demonstrate the strong opposition he faces from within his own party.
